“Pakistan Cricket Team – one moment down, one moment up” this was what former English Skipper Nasser Hussain had to say about Pakistan Cricket Team on the account of Champions Trophy 2017 Final against India. The statement is so accurate that it can be the official tagline of Pakistan Cricket Team. Champions Trophy 17’ was one of the highest moments of Pakistan Cricket. However, it is quite sad that since that day Pakistan has not witnessed a lot of good moments, and most of the times fans were disappointed by the team’s performance. No wonder, in the third world nations, sports are the only rejoice moment for the whole nation. And the Pakistani nation has not relived many such moments: specially in the 2010s era.
We as a nation have suffered enough due to terrorism and other problems we have had since many years. And almost everything has affected our every other thing. This includes sports, arts and entertainment. There’s no doubt that there’s talent, but not enough support to utilize or channelize the talent. 2009 was the year when, after an attack on Sri Lankan Cricket Team the doors were forever closed for international cricket. But now after 10 years, we are back. Pakistan has progressed much, after losing many innocent citizens as well as army personnel international cricket is back in Pakistan.
Yet, there are still sites to be visited, cricket requires a lot more attention, as there’s a new management, the team is under construction with the caution saying *men at work*. Our players just do not seem ready for it, or the management is not working as they should and as the critics argue. Whatever the reasons, our team has seen a downfall specially in this year. And if we talk about Cricket World Cup 2019: the performance was not up to the mark, it felt like there were only 3-4 players putting the effort and the whole team relied on the same athletes.
The rankings as per 10th November 2019 on the ICC’s official website tells us that Pakistan ranks seventh, sixth and first; Test Championship, ODI Championship and Twenty20 rankings respectively. The t20 rankings aren’t that bad, I suppose but here’s the plot twist: Pakistan’s rating is 270 and the team ranked 2nd is Australia and rating for Australia is 269, so there’s little margin for error. Hold your breath, as we discuss the ODI and Test rankings which are sixth and seventh respectively. We are nowhere near to be seen the top five. Which tells me that situation has got quite sensitive, we won the CT17 with luck and qoum ki duaein, but the qoum was out of duas during the CWC19. And thus, we lost, and that’s the bitter truth. Because our players as well as the management as well as the institution as well as the system is outdated, we are still trying hard ways to work in the age of smart work. Newer approaches should be taken under consideration and newer techniques should be evaluated and tried.
