In the past few years, more schools have made it compulsory for their students to wear uniforms. While there are many advocates for the continuous usage of school uniforms, others are evidently against it. Although the uniform requirement has just been recently imposed, uniforms have been in centuries. The first documented usage in education was in 1222, where students were required to wear a robe-like outfit. Here are some of the reasons why uniforms should be banned. 1. Uniforms are only stimulating commercial interests. They are not solving the concerns that they are geared for. Because of the limitless profits that go with uniforms, it is no surprise that more corporations are lobbying for the requirement of these homogenized outfits. it is fair to say that such institutions are supporting studies on uniforms not because of concern, but because of the impact it has on their businesses. 2. Imposing a school uniform requirement can be detrimental to adult development especially in areas of decision making. Clothing is considered as one of the means of building identity and without the freedom to choose, transition to adulthood can be dampened.
3. Uniforms aim to give a homogeneous look rather than improving a student’s self image.
4. School uniforms are so boring, can be so uncomfortable most times and are generally disliked. 5. The high cost is another reason why uniform should be banned. Instead of getting a free public school education, parents are forced to spend considerable amount on uniforms.
